Dear Friends and Partners,

Danielle and I were talking about the need, want and habit of complaining. Danielle read  in Gaye Hendricks' The Most Important 14 Pages You'll Ever Read In Your Lifethat if you complain more than three times about anything then it is something that you are inviting into your life that you need to 'clean up'. And how true that is.

I look at my simple annoyances and am often pushed to put them off rather than 'fix' them; it could be the need to organize the cupboard to caulk the tub. If the recurring complaint is BIG, tackle it faster and 'eat that frog'.

Some things take more time to complete but when they are approached quickly, can save a lot of pain; after all that is what we (people) are trying to avoid.

Alberta to Lead Canadian Economic Growth 2014

By Mario Toneguzzi, Calgary Herald, July 10th 2013

CALGARY — Alberta is expected to lead the country in economic growth next year, according to a new report released Wednesday by TD Economics.

The report said Alberta’s Real GDP growth will be 3.6 per cent in 2014 following a 2.8 per cent hike this year. Economic growth in the province in 2013 will be behind only Newfoundland & Labrador’s nation-leading 4.5 per cent increase.

“Despite the recent flooding, Alberta will be one strongest economies in Canada in 2013. Total energy sector revenue and reinvestment is expected to be higher than in 2012, when provincial GDP growth was four per cent,” said Ben Brunnen, a Calgary economic consultant and former chief economist of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

“Our unemployment rate is low, net interprovincial migration is high, and May residential building permits are the highest they’ve been since 2007. While the recent flooding will take some of the wind out the economic sails for southern Alberta, particularly in the retail sector, major project announcements such as the Brookfield Herald block and the Telus Sky demonstrate long-term confidence in Calgary and Alberta’s fundamentals.” FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE

Oil Rises Near US $106 a Barrel for 3rd Weekly Increase, Gasoline Futures Soar

By The Associated Press, July 12th 2013

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The price of oil rose to near US$106 a barrel Friday, supported by continuing tensions in Egypt and a sharp drop of U.S. crude stockpiles.

Benchmark crude oil for August delivery gained $1.04 to $105.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Even with a drop of $1.60 a barrel Thursday, the price of oil rose $2.73 this week and is up nearly 10 per cent in July.

Oil has risen from around $97 on July 1, mainly for two reasons. Traders are concerned that unrest in Egypt could affect oil shipments through the Suez Canal, a key shipping lane. And U.S. supplies of oil and gasoline have dropped dramatically in the past two weeks, signalling a rise in demand in the world's largest economy.

Brent crude gained $1.08 to $108.81 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.   GRAB THIS STORY

By Bill Mah, Edmonton Journal, July 13th, 2013

Domestic and international travellers who face long waits at the Edmonton International Airport can now enjoy a first-class lounge experience with the opening of a new pay-for-use facility.

On Thursday, Hong Kong-based Plaza Premium Lounge officially opened a 4,520-square-foot location at the airport's domestic-international departures lounge. A sister facility, in the airport's U.S. departures terminal, opened in 2012.

The lounges are open to all paying customers, regardless of airline or travel class, and cater especially to business and conference travelers.

Plaza Premium Lounge got its start when founder Song Hoi See left his job as an investment banker to start his own business, leaving behind the luxury of first class for the rigors of economy class.  READ MORE HERE

Dear Friends and Partners,

Albertans were busy last year, and just as many had an 'active' 2011 with 52,398 babies being born in 2012.  That sets a record for the province and has continued the pace of the last 3 years. That's just shy of a city the size of Grande Prairie being birthed; population 55,032 respectively.

Although we haven't seen a 'full bloom boom' come on, and in some cases we have seen a slow down in oil and gas production, as a province we are definitely doing well.

Population growth is a key indicator to watch as an investor. Whenever growth occurs be it from an influx of workers or just plain old procreation, you can anticipate a demand for housing. Folks will enter the housing market (starter homes), out grow their current homes (upgrade to larger ones) or in the case of workers and younger families, enter the rental market.

When choosing an investment property always consider who your ideal tenant is and even more importantly as part of your exit strategy, who your end buyer will be.

Alberta Consumer Confidence: Albertans Most Optimistic About Canadian Economy

By The Huffington Post, May 16th 2013

Canadians aren't too optimistic about what the country's economic future holds, that is, unless those Canadians live in Alberta.
The latest RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook released Thursday morning shows the majority of Canadians feel less confident about the state of the national economy currently compared to the previous quarter.

"The RBC CCO indicates that economic mood in Canada has darkened over the last quarter... the first time in nearly two years that there has been an overall decrease in the national index," the report states.

"Only six-in-ten (60 per cent) Canadians think the economy is in good shape (down a significant eight points since last quarter). More Canadians believe the economy will worsen in the next year (30 per cent) rather than improve (26 per cent)."  FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE

Alberta Oil Sands Production Likely to Double by 2022

By Reuters, May 8th 2013

CALGARY — Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board said on Wednesday it expects output from the province’s oil sands to double to 3.8 million barrels a day by 2022.
The board, which regulates the province’s oil and gas industry, said it expects oil sands production to hit 3.8 million bpd in nine years, up from 1.9 million bpd in 2012.

Canada’s oil sands are the world’s third-largest crude reserves, behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, but the biggest open to investment by private oil companies.

The expected increase in production in Alberta is based on new projects and expansion of existing projects by companies including Imperial Oil Ltd, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd and Suncor Energy Inc, among others.  GRAB THIS STORY

Oil Sands: Alberta's New Bold Stance Deserves Credit

By Claudia Cattaneo, National Post, May 17th 2013
Albertans hurt by deep budget cuts due to shrinking provincial revenue from discounted bitumen prices may question the province’s bold buildup of its international presence.

The come-from-behind victory of Christy Clark’s Liberals in Tuesday’s British Columbia election comes as a big relief to those involved in Western Canada’s energy-based economy, but the close call must serve as an impetus to find a fairer way to share the risks and benefits of development.

To the extent that the new strategy, announced Friday in Calgary, helps Alberta deal with concerns about whether it’s a responsible oil producer, it is a necessity.

Without new export pipelines and new oil customers, the future of Alberta’s economy, and as a consequence the government’s ability to support its programs, is grim. Already, the energy sector has dialed down growth plans while waiting for pipeline decisions to be made.  READ MORE HERE

Dear Friends and Partners,

Not only have we had warm weather lately, but we've seen a hot start to multi-family real estate in some of our key areas. How about you? What's the real estate climate like where you live? Are you seeing more listings on your street; anything worth buying? Many deals continue to trade hands before hitting the MLS, but you can still standout, like we do, and attract the right vendors to you. We can see a lot of volatility in stock markets as well as local real estate markets and that creates opportunity. I spoke with several will-be, no longer would-be, investors at the last REIN meeting I attended.  I helped them design a personal strategy to evaluate when and when not to pull the trigger. If you need help like this, send me an email with 'Will-Be Investor' in the subject line and I'll endeavor to help you too.

Alberta Bucking Economic Trends

By Gordon Isfeld, Financial Post & Edmonton Journal, February 9th 2013

For a while, it looked like Canada's job market would remain oblivious to the serious signs of a slumping economy. Ditto the housing sector, which had been defying forecasts of an impending slowdown for months.
Now, reality appears to be putting both sectors in check, at least outside of Alberta.  "Combined with the steep drop in housing starts as well as the still-wide trade deficit, the jobs report rounds out a day of infamy for Canadian economic stats," said Doug Porter, chief economist for BMO Capital Markets.  GRAB THIS STORY

Jim Prentice Advocates for Oil Pipeline Across Canada

Dawn Walton, Globe and Mail, February 9th 2013

CALGARY - Market access for Alberta’s oil is the “most important economic issue” facing Canada, according to former federal cabinet minister Jim Prentice, who called for more pipelines to move energy to new markets.
Speaking to an economic forum on in Calgary on Saturday, Mr. Prentice, who held cabinet postings including industry and environment under the Harper Conservative government before returning to the private sector as executive vice-president and vice chairman of CIBC, said Canada has failed to execute a cohesive energy strategy.   FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE

No Alberta Oil Exported From West Coast Without Cooperation

By David Dodge and Ted Morton, Troy Media, February 9th 2013
The passing of former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed provided an occasion to remember not just his fierce defense of Alberta against the predatory policies of then prime minister Pierre Trudeau, but the substance of that defense: strong provincial rights based on the constitutional principle of equality of the provinces.

Equality of the provinces may not sound like a big deal today. But in the 1970s, it was.

To appreciate the significance of Lougheed’s achievement, it is necessary to recall the state of Canadian federalism after the Second World War. Writing in 1954, J.R. Mallory, one of English Canada’s leading constitutional scholars and a professor at McGill University, observed that “in a federal system there is assumed an equality of influence and treatment of the various individual units,” but that “[i]n Canada the facts are, and always have been, very different.”  READ MORE HERE

Oilsands Key to Global Energy Growth IEA

Postmedia News Nov 9, 2011 – 8:59 AM ET | Last Updated: Nov 10, 2011 10:34 AM ET
By Peter O’Neil

OTTAWA —Alberta’s oil sands provide one of the world’s few areas of energy production growth outside the volatile Middle East and North Africa, though environmental concerns could hinder its expansion, the International Energy Agency said in a report Wednesday.

The commentary was contained in an IEA analysis that warned the world is at risk of being locked into an “insecure, inefficient and high-carbon energy system” that will lead to average temperature increases of 3.5 C — well above the 2 C benchmark most scientists advise as the maximum increase to avoid dangerous climate change. Canada Defiant after U.S oil pipeline rebuff
Thu Nov 10, 2011 6:33pm EST

By David Ljunggren, Randall Palmer and Jeffrey Jones

OTTAWA/CALGARY, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Canada will keep promoting crude from the tar sands of northern Alberta as a secure source of energy despite a U.S. decision to delay approval of a pipeline to carry the oil from Alberta to Texas, officials said on Thursday.

The Canadian government and the oil industry have limited options, however, as another controversial proposal to build a pipeline to export tar sands crude to Asian markets is just at the beginning of a lengthy review process. FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE

Dear Friends and Partners,

My buddy Greg texted me last Wednesday to see if I was in town so that we could meet for dinner. After a few messages back and forth I picked up the phone to continue the conversation and clarify our plans; so much can get missed in a text. I like meeting up with Greg whenever and wherever I can, he is always on the go. Earlier this year Greg took his design company public and has been the center of a media storm promoting his corporation and vision - He's a charismatic, busy and eligible bachelor too.

We met up at a local kid friendly cafe so that my wife and son could join in the conversation, Greg and Danielle have been friends for years, too. We listened to Greg's stories of how rival companies jetted him to NYC and London in hopes of courting a business deal or buyout. Greg also spent 1 month traveling around Buenos Aires, learning the 'true-tango'. We sipped our organic juices and then started hitting the espressos as the Latin American stories heated up.

It was a great visit and man, did we have a case of FOMO on the way home.... I know that my friend has a bit of FOMO too when he sees our family life, especially as he's stepping into his mid-40's. To be in absolute serenity may be to live in the now; be happily in the moment. But, it isn't always that way when you are constantly striving to be, do or have something more or better; be it spiritual or physical. Essentially FOMO is the modern version of keeping up with the Joneses, it is simply augmented, or even agitated, by technology.

You may not suffer from the Fear Of Missing Out, but like anyone at some point you may find yourself pining for a week (or a year) away on the desert island of your dreams. Every summer I like to take time off and focus away from my business and into the outdoors and family activities. I aim to incorporate that into everyday I have, but often don't. Enjoy YOUR summer and remember to take time off for you.

Canadian Oil; Ethical, and Sensible

By Jullien Russell Brunet, Glob and Mail. Tuesday July 19th, 2011

While the Canadian government worries about the country’s dependence on oil exports to the U.S., the security of future sales there and developing a national energy strategy, the Fraser Institute’s Mark Milke offers Americans a stark choice: It's us, or someone much more unsavoury. In short, a study released Tuesday by the Vancouver-based think tank argues that “attempts to restrict U.S. imports of Canadian oil ignore the reality of U.S. dependence on foreign oil and could force America to buy oil from repressive governments.”READ MORE HERE

Get Ready to Rock and Roll Alberta!

Alberta Emerging As Safe Haven Among Growing Economic Volatility

"It will morph into something that will not be very kind to financial assets, but may be kind to Alberta. One solution is to take a shot of Novocain, invest in Alberta, and I have a suspicion you will come out ahead. A second approach is to hold real assets or proxies for real assets, such as TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) and inflation-linked bonds. A third way to approach things is to play by the rules as they're written, which demands being cautious, but I don't mean buying bonds. I mean it is incumbent on all of us to maximize complexity in your portfolio, which is the responsiveness of your portfolio to macro-economic outcomes." Vinay Pande, chief investment adviser for global markets research with German-based Deutsche Bank

I think you can spare the Novocain if you are investing directly into real assets (like owning a revenue property) that you control. once again the Provincial, National and Global economies are looking at Alberta as a safe haven. The only risk you have investing in Edmonton is looking to make too fast a buck and not stay the course. When you are prudent and invest into a cash-flowing asset, in an expanding market - you will do well.

Final Anthony Henday Drive Gets Green Light

The massive project — named Anthony Henday Drive Northeast — will be Alberta’s single largest highway construction project to date with 47 bridges, eight interchanges and 27 kilometres of six- and eight-lane divided road that will connect Whitemud Drive East to the Manning Freeway. It’s expected to ease the traffic crush on Yellowhead Trail and, to some degree, the Whitemud.

“I really do believe another period of rapid growth is coming, and it’s coming quicker than you think,” Stelmach said of the province’s continued investment in infrastructure. “It’s no secret that Alberta wasn’t ready for the last one, but we will be ready for the next one. We are moving forward as a province. The world is changing, and Alberta is changing and we’re meeting the demands of the new economic order.”

I second that Mr. Premier, we are on the cusp of another wave of growth. A nice 3-5-7 year cycle I hope. The Anthony Henday has already proven to link up areas of the South East, particularly Millwoods and Ellerslie. And the South West areas have grown, like Terrwilligar, Rutherford and the Hamptons into nice, beautiful communities. Along with the great connectivity, real estate prices have followed and birthed some really scenic areas with upscale shopping and eateries that is still affordable to live. The NE will also experience a price jump in homes and a jump in value by being better connected.
