Dear Friends and Partners,

Although the majority of news coming out of Alberta lately has been negative, and surely more is one the way, Alberta is never idle. There is substantial evolution taking place. Despite having a dose of ‘it’ll get worse before it can get better disease’, we have the downtown core growing and a tireless energy sector striving for innovation.

I was part of a small group that attended a bespoke economic presentation from the government of AB last week. The major takeaways were that we (Alberta) need to continue strategically diversifying (I say continue, because we’ve been diversifying for 20 years) our energy sector. Alberta is a great innovator but ideas need to be focused on a collective goal, not independently. The guiding target that was presented was to reduce oilsands water consumption by 50% before 2030. This idea has been discussed before, but I feel there is an urgency to work collectively on this goal.

Focused diversification within the energy sector and on a measurable target, makes sense. By reducing the amount of water used in extracting oil, we can decrease cost and further reduce environmental impact.

Until we make this change (and others) we remain increasingly vulnerable to low oil prices, political agendas and (for right or wrong) environmental critique. Jump to one idea here.

How the West was done: Plummeting oil prices and political change cosier to stall Canada’s growth engine

By Claudia Cattaneo, Financial Post Media, March 2nd, 2016

As painful as it is, there is much to be learned from Canada’s economic decline, such as: We are getting lots of what we (and many of our politicians) wished for and finally getting a clear picture of what Canada looks like without a strong oil sector.

Partly due to the oil price collapse, partly by the design of new governments in Alberta and Ottawa, oil no longer fuels the economic engine. Climate change policy has won the day and the oil sands’ industry has been kneecapped.

Proposed bitumen pipelines have been gutted by organized campaigns and red tape. The West’s economic leadership has been quashed, and with that — for now — its political clout. THIS ARTICLE

Rob Roach: Alberta’s identity is built on growth for good reason

By Rob Roach, Edmonton Journal, March 10th, 2016

When it comes to population growth, Alberta is an outlier.

Our GDP per capita is among the highest in the world, but our population growth rate is more in keeping with relatively poor places such as Ethiopia and Nigeria.

While the populations of wealthy countries like Japan and Germany are shrinking, Alberta’s average annual population growth between 2004-14 was over eight times greater than in the European Union and almost three times the rate in the United States.

Alberta’s population has increased by 1.2 million people since 2000 — roughly equivalent to adding another Calgary or Edmonton to the province.  GRAB THIS STORY

Why reducing water consumption is critical to Oil Sands competitiveness
Despite considerable progress, thermal oil sands producers desperately need to reduce water consumption. Are solvents the answer?

By Jesse Snyder, Alberta Oil, March 2nd., 2016

For the people who operate and manage steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects, oil is almost treated as a by-product to what is actually their primary concern: water. Indeed, SAGD operations are basically just “water facilities with an oil problem,” according to Darren Massey, a programs leader at GE’s Customer Innovation Centre, a Calgary-based facility where energy companies try to tackle the fundamental challenges inherent in developing heavy oil. “Water is really the main resource that you have to manage here,” he says. “The energy that you put in to generate that high-temperature steam accounts for a substantial portion of your total costs.” READ MORE HERE

Dear Friends and Partners,

Sunday I woke up to the familiar sound of big, gusty, fall winds. It was refreshing. The funny thing was that the wind was warm, not cool like it usually is this season. Outside is warm and sunny, the temperature in the high 20's.

I look down the road and the grasses are all mown short and remain various shades of green; the vibrant dark green of a well fertilized early summer lawn to the lighter, softer colours of a suntanned late summer pitch. What I found interesting was that the leaves were changing beginning to crumple up and tumble down the street. Despite our summer weather, fall is almost here.

During this short season (here in Edmonton that is) we find it an excellent time to clean up and prep properties for the winter freeze and more importantly, the spring thaw. Cleaning gutters, adjusting downspouts, sealing and coating exterior/interior walls, repairing windows, roofs, chimneys and the like. You can find detailed lists of fall prep online.

Also with this time of year we contemplate the internal, mental prep needed to march into Q3. This is a great time to review your yearly goals, make sure you are on track to finish strong and adjust were needed.

Edmonton paycheques third largest in Canada

By Andrea Sands, Edmonton Journal, September 12th, 2013

EDMONTON - New statistics on Canada’s income levels and housing show Edmonton’s economy is one of the most successful and dynamic in the country, says the city’s chief economist.

That doesn’t mean, however, that some people aren’t left behind, John Rose said. A small number of Edmontonians earning extraordinarily high incomes can skew income numbers upward, “so I’m a little nervous about income-distribution issues,” he said.  FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE

'Dutch disease' Build Healtheir Economy, Economist says

By Laura Payton, CBC News, September 5th 2013

The concept behind "Dutch disease" — the idea that a resource boom is bad for the manufacturing sector — is entirely wrong, economist Stephen Gordon argues in a new report.
Federal politicians have argued over Dutch disease as part of the debate surrounding Canada's oilsands and whether development should be slowed.

The argument says that a resource boom — like the one seen in the oilsands — drives up the value of the currency, making exports more expensive for customers outside of Canada and costing manufacturers some of their business. GRAB THIS STORY

Laphier: No need to listen to Neil Young's take on the Oilsands

By Gary Lamphier, Edmonton Journal, September 11th, 2013

EDMONTON - "As a serious-minded newspaper columnist, I woke up Wednesday with one pressing question on my mind: What does Neil Young think?
I was desperate to hear his views on just about anything - twerking, Miley Cyrus's new video, the situation in Syria, Stephen Harper's hair, Anthony Weiner's sexting habits, the Eskimos' struggling offensive line, you name it.
I need to know, because clearly, what the 67-year-old rocker and anti-oilsands activist thinks about the big issues of the day is of vital importance to the mainstream media.
Why, just yesterday the Toronto-born music icon and green crusader was prominently featured in most major newspapers (including this one) after comparing Fort McMurray toHiroshima, the Japanese city that was obliterated by a U.S. atomic bomb on Aug. 6, 1945.

At first I thought it was a ridiculous, wholly inappropriate analogy from a guy who knows little about the energy industry. Fort McMurray is like Hiroshima? Really? That seemed utterly absurd, not to mention an insult to the memories of the thousands who died that terrible day." READ MORE HERE

Come to Edmonton

The elite of Edmonton bankers made their way to Toronto to lure finance specialist and, hopefully, more capital to Alberta.

"Alberta is going to be generating a lot of investment potential in the next 20, 30 years, so we think it's important to have a homegrown financial services industry," says Ron Gilbertson, president and chief executive of Edmonton Economic Development Corp.

Edmonton, Alberta already has $135 Billion, no not million, being managed out of the city. The city has already attracted a lot of capital but now needs savvy professionals to handle and grow it.

"We have the whole ball of wax," Mr. Mowat says. "All of the opportunity is there."

The World and Your Backyard

Life in Fort McMurray has certainly slowed down since the oil prices dropped. Things haven't stopped though.

The city where there were never enough workers now has a chance to pick and choose rather than hire the first body that walks in. The infrastructure that couldn't house a population that tripled can now catch up and improve housing.

“When you take a population that has doubled and is on its way to tripling, every piece of infrastructure you can think of is still in a catch-up phase,” “This is a golden opportunity to get caught up to some of those needs and be better prepared.” Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake

“Now is an opportunity for us to be more competitive,” “Because we are local, we don’t carry the living-out allowances, we don’t have the high costs of travel expenses. Our people come from the community.” Nicole Bourque-Bouchier, president of the Northeastern Alberta Aboriginal Business Association.
“I don’t think the growth will be anywhere as intense as it has been, but I don’t think it will subside,” “It’s a matter of keeping in mind what is going on around the world and what that means in our own back yard.” Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake
